Asbestos handling and removal in Kansas City can be dangerous and is something a skilled, trained professional should identify and dispose of. Smart Environmental Services is here to help develop an abatement plan to meet your specific needs.
Why can it be Dangerous?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber. Due to its unique insulative properties, it was used in many building materials until the 1970s when it was found to be harmful. Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) may include popcorn ceilings, flooring tiles and mastics, textured paints, acoustical plaster, insulation around pipes, seam tape around ductwork, brake pads or chalkboards among many others.
There is NO known safe level of exposure to ACMs. The fibers are small and can migrate through the body where they cause damage to the respiratory system. The major health risks associated with exposure are:
· Asbestosis – scarring of the lungs
· Mesothelioma – cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdominal cavity
· Lung Cancer
Can I Remove My Own Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in Missouri or Kansas?
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ ACM regulations apply to commercial structures in Missouri and to some residential structures. Most single-family residences are exempt. The department requires notification of demolitions and abatement projects involving regulated structures at least 10 working days before crews begin a project. Full MO regulations can be viewed here.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment permit homeowners to collect samples if they suspect they have ACMs, but it is not recommended. They cite that “the best approach is to seek the service of a licensed asbestos professional. Removal of ACMs and post-removal cleanup requires special handling skills and compliance with regulations.”
If you think ACMs may be in your home, the best thing you can do is leave it alone. Generally, ACMs in good condition will not release fibers into the air. There is no danger unless the materials are disturbed and the fibers released and subsequently inhaled into the lungs.
The DIY Website, TheSpruce.com says, “Hiring an…abatement company is the safest, easiest method of removing asbestos from your house. Abatement companies are equipped with both the experience of working…with specialized tools and materials. ”
