Kansas City, Missouri, has launched a $6.4 million lead removal and abatement initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The project focuses on older homes built before 1940, where lead-based paint and plumbing pose the highest risks to children and families.
Why Lead Removal and Abatement Matter
Lead dust from aging paint or pipes can cause severe health problems, particularly in children under six. Even small amounts of lead can affect brain development, behavior, and learning. That’s why this initiative is so critical; it’s not just about buildings; it’s about safeguarding futures.
The grant will fund remediation in approximately 170 homes, including both owner-occupied and rental units, at little or no cost to residents. The city’s Health Department is also investing in training more than 100 local contractors to ensure that future projects meet the highest safety standards. Inspections and cleanup work began in early 2025, marking real progress toward a healthier Kansas City.
