Mold Removal Done The SMART Way

If mold removal is something you have been meaning to take care of, don’t wait! The summer and early autumn months here in the Midwest provided mold with the perfect conditions in which to gain a foothold.  Warm weather and high humidity, combined with heavy rains and flooding, have made the conditions even more favorable than usual. SMART Environmental Services’s team of experts can help you solve your mold problems.

You may have seen or read accounts of people coming down with mysterious illnesses and having their symptoms attributed to “toxic black mold” in their homes or offices. While there are molds that are very dark in color, and some can make you sick if you are sensitive to them, there is no “toxic black mold” in existence. There is one particular mold, Stachybotrys chartarum, that has received a lot of press in recent years. It is black or dark green in appearance. Like all molds, it sometimes causes illness in people who are sensitive to it. This particular mold produces mycotoxins that can cause more serious health issues, because a mycotoxin is a toxin produced by a fungus, and should be removed by a professional if present. Whether mold looks black, green, gray, orange or some other color is not an indication of its toxicity, but rather is determined by the type of material it is consuming as it grows.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “Allergic reactions to mold are common. They can be immediate or delayed. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold.” In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of anyone, not just individuals with known mold allergies. The EPA further notes that “symptoms other than the allergic and irritant types are not commonly reported as a result of inhaling mold.” If someone in your family has lung problems or is sensitive or allergic to mold, you need a mold removal expert to remedy the problem.

Mold will cause damage to structures if left untreated. Spores are everywhere. They can travel through the air, entering your home through open doors or windows. They can also hitch a ride on your clothing or on your pets. Mold consumes organic matter such as drywall, carpet, fabrics and wood. In addition to food, mold needs warmth and moisture in order to grow. Hidden leaks in roofs or plumbing, overflowing appliances or gutters and flooded basements can all result in areas of moisture where mold can thrive unseen.
